At Inspīr Carnegie Hill, we believe in the power of stories – how they shape us, inspire us, and bring us together as a community. Each resident brings a rich and unique perspective to our community, and today, we are honored to share the Frieda’s story – a woman whose life has been marked by strength, grace, and an unwavering commitment to growth. Originally from a small farm town in Switzerland, Frida’s path took her across continents and through remarkable chapters of work, discovery, and personal transformation. Here latest chapter – at Inspīr – is one focused on healing, connection, and living with intention.

Q: Where did you live before Inspīr?

I lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I came to New York in 1961 and have called this area home ever since.

Q: What brought you to Inspīr?

I was in Switzerland when I suddenly became ill. I flew home and was diagnosed with cancer and a rare neurological and autoimmune disorder. My daughters stepped in and found Inspīr – they took care of everything. Moving here was a major life change, but one that came with a great deal of comfort and reassurance during a time I needed it most.

Q: What has impressed you about your experience here?

When I first moved in, I was a little shocked because I had been healthy my whole life, and all of a sudden, I wasn’t. I needed the extra help, and it was hard to accept at first. But what truly impressed me was the warmth of the people here. The associates are incredibly attentive and compassionate, and the other residents are so kind and interesting. There is a deep sense of community here that has made all the difference.

Q: How do you spend your time at Inspīr?

My focus is on wellness. I participate in massage therapy, tai chi, and daily swimming—all of which support my body and bring me joy. The programs here are thoughtful and restorative. I also allow myself the rest I need. This chapter is about listening to my body and giving it what it needs to thrive.

Q: Tell me about your past.

I grew up on a small farm in Switzerland, where we did everything by hand – hard work was part of my daily life. School vacations were always planned around the farm’s schedule. In Switzerland, when you finish school, you start an apprenticeship. You either become a secretary, work in an office, or work in a hotel. I chose to apprentice in the hotel industry, but I knew I needed to learn more languages to grow in the field. That’s what brought me to New York.

After arriving in New York, I worked as a nanny before having the opportunity to work at the World’s Fair. While there, I met someone from the Pan Am Building who offered me a job at the Zum Zum Restaurant. I spent ten years at Zum Zum, a job I truly loved and one that taught me so much, until my daughter was born. Later, I worked for fifteen years at Chalet Suisse, a four-star restaurant. When it closed, I moved on to Lutèce, New York’s most famous restaurant.

Q: What advice do you have for younger generations?

I want younger generations to know how much opportunity is out there. You can build the life you want, if you are willing to work for it. The world is full of possibilities. Be curious, take chances, and don’t be afraid to start over.

Frieda’s journey is a powerful reminder of how embracing change can lead to transformation. At Inspīr Carnegie Hill, she’s found a home where support, wellness, and a vibrant community empower her to continue living fully—on her own terms. We are proud to have Frieda as part of our Inspīr family and celebrate the resilience and wisdom she brings to our community every day
