At Inspīr Carnegie Hill we understand the unique challenges faced by older adults in the LGBTQ+ community when seeking inclusive senior living communities. AARP, a nationwide nonprofit organization for older adults, states that middle-aged and older LGBTQ+ adults express significant concerns regarding experiencing discrimination and receiving adequate support as they age. SAGE, an advocacy and support agency for LGBT+ seniors, states that almost 50% of senior adults in same-sex relationships have encountered discrimination when looking for senior living. Additionally, individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ often receive a lower standard of healthcare and may experience mistreatment. Providing inclusive and diverse senior living communities is of utmost importance.
Honoring the LGBTQ+ Rights Journey
The LGBTQ+ community has encountered numerous challenges on its path toward equality and inclusion, not only in senior living but also in society at large. At Inspīr, we endeavor to honor the LGBTQ+ rights journey, from its inception to contemporary advocacy efforts. The Stonewall Riots represented a watershed moment in the struggle for LGBTQ+ equality. Taking place in our beloved New York City in 1969, the police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a renowned gay bar, sparked outrage among patrons and allies who refused to tolerate discrimination. The subsequent protests ignited a new era of LGBTQ+ activism and advocacy.
"Working in an inclusive environment like Inspīr Carnegie Hill means actively participating in a community dedicated to recognizing and advancing LGBTQ+ rights. We honor the legacy of milestones like the Stonewall Riots and the Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing same-sex marriage, knowing that the journey toward inclusivity is ongoing. Our commitment to initiatives such as SAGEcare Platinum Credentials ensures that we are not just allies, but advocates for every resident's right to be their true self." — Michelle Rubel, Director of Hospitality
Inspīr takes pride in its continued involvement in ongoing activism and advocacy, reaffirming our dedication through initiatives such as our SAGEcare Platinum Credentials and promotion of community inclusivity. We champion the freedom of every individual to love whomever they choose. The 2003 United States Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas, which addressed sodomy laws, marked a pivotal milestone in the pursuit of LGBTQ+ equality. The Court's ruling, declaring laws criminalizing homosexuality unconstitutional, was a significant and empowering moment, allowing millions to love without fear. At Inspīr, we strive to foster a community where all residents feel empowered to express themselves and love freely.
Upholding LGBTQ+ Inclusivity with SAGECare Platinum Credential
Here at Inspir, we are proud to be a SAGECare Platinum credentialed provider. This achievement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing excellent care and support to the LGBTQ+ senior community. To earn this coveted credential, a minimum of 80% of Inspīr’s management and non-management staff completed training in LGBTQ+ aging cultural competency. The training encompassed education on historical and current LGBTQ+ struggles, training on proper terminology in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity, and specific strategies to address challenges faced by this demographic. This training has had a significant effect within Inspīr’s senior living community as we pursue our mission to foster a community abundant with inclusivity and support for everyone.
