At Inspīr Carnegie Hill, each resident brings a unique and fascinating life story that enriches our residence. Today, we are delighted to share the journey of one such resident, Maria, whose path led from Italy to New York City and eventually to Inspīr. With a background in fashion and an adventurous spirit, Maria has embraced change, independence, and creativity throughout her life. In this conversation, Maria reflects on her experiences, her transition to Inspīr, and the lessons she learned along the way.

Q: Can you share a bit about where you lived before coming to Inspīr?

Before moving to Inspīr, I lived on the Upper East Side in my own apartment. It was a space I was very comfortable in, but over time, I realized I needed a change.

Q: What influenced your decision to move to Inspīr?

My son was concerned about me living alone, especially since I have a minor health issues. I also recognized that being in a community setting would provide a sense of security. If anything were to happen, I knew there would be people around to assist me. That peace of mind was an important factor in my decision.

Q: What have you found most rewarding about your experience here?

The biggest difference is that I’m no longer alone. At Inspīr, I don’t have to worry about handling the responsibilities I once had in my apartment. The support and services here allow me to focus on enjoying life rather than managing household tasks.

Q: How do you like to spend your days at Inspīr?

I take full advantage of the wonderful programs offered here. I especially enjoy watching documentaries in the theater, as well as reading and relaxing. Sharing meals with other residents has been a great way to connect with people and build friendships.

Q: How was your move-in experience?

Surprisingly seamless! My previous apartment was similar in size, so I brought everything with me. To my amazement, everything fit perfectly, making the transition much easier than I had anticipated.

Q: Tell us about your early life and career journey.

I was born and raised in Italy, and much of my childhood was spent during the war, though my area near Switzerland was relatively protected. As I grew older, my family moved to Milan, where I began working as a model. My career allowed me to travel throughout Italy and Europe, which eventually brought me to New York for an assignment. I immediately fell in love with the city and decided to move here when I was 28.

After some time, I transitioned from modeling to working on the business side of fashion. I started as an assistant to a designer at Chester Weinberg but soon realized I wanted to create something of my own. I introduced Italian fashion trends at a more accessible price, and later, I focused on high-end sleepwear and swimwear. Eventually, I launched my own line of robes and nightgowns, selling them to shops that previously didn’t have access to these products. I ran that business for many years before closing it just three years ago.

Q: Looking back, what do you consider to be one of the most extraordinary moments in your life?

I moved to the United States from Italy when I was just 28 years old. It was a bold decision, especially since I didn’t speak much English at the time. I taught myself the language by watching a famous announcer on television every night, listening carefully, and gradually picking it up. It was a challenging but rewarding experience that shaped who I am today.

This remarkable journey from Italy to New York and beyond is a testament to the courage and resilience that defines so many of our residents at Inspīr Carnegie Hill. With a lifelong passion for creativity, adaptability, and personal growth, Maria continues to inspire those around her. We are honored to have her as part of our community, where these stories and experiences enrich our shared home.
