At Inspir Carnegie Hill, we are fortunate to have a diverse group of accomplished individuals who have led remarkable lives and continue to pursue their passions with unwavering determination. One such resident is Barbara S., whose journey from an aspiring doctor to a trailblazing researcher and now a celebrated sculptor is a testament to the power of creativity and resilience. In this Q&A, we delve into Barbara's inspiring story and her experiences as a resident of our vibrant community.

Q: Can you share a bit about your early life and how you discovered your creative side?

Born and raised in Queens, I was always drawn to the sciences and initially dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, my mother had other plans for me, insisting that I pursue a career as a nurse or secretary. Fortunately, I inherited a creative spirit from my father, who was a skilled metalworker. He even crafted a cherished table for me that still adorns my apartment to this day.

Q: Despite the obstacles, you forged your own path. Can you tell us about your professional journey?

Undeterred by the expectations placed upon me, I worked as a medical technologist during the day while studying for my MBA by night. This determination led me to run a research lab at Long Island Jewish, where I focused on understanding the triggers of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Although the answer remained elusive, my passion for discovery propelled me to travel extensively, speaking at prestigious venues in Germany and at the University of Oxford in the UK.

Q: After retiring, you discovered a new passion in art and sculpture. What drew you to this creative pursuit?

In my early 70s, I stumbled upon a new passion – art and sculpture. Working with my hands and creating tangible pieces proved to be incredibly therapeutic for me. Inspired by photographs in The New York Times, I began sculpting captivating head sculptures, honing my craft both at home and through classes at the 92NY.

Additionally, the community's diverse social, cultural, and educational offerings, including the "On The Town" experiences, fuel my love for the arts, theater, opera, and symphony.

Q: What advice would you give to others seeking to embrace their passions later in life?

My journey is a reminder that it's never too late to pursue your passions and embrace your unique spirit. Despite the obstacles and expectations placed upon me, I remained true to myself and followed my heart. At Inspīr, I've found a supportive community that celebrates artistic expression and personal growth, and I encourage others to seek out environments that nurture their passions, no matter their age or circumstances.
