At Inspīr Embassy Row, wellness is not an amenity – it’s a philosophy. Our commitment to holistic well-being comes to life through thoughtfully designed programs and expertly guided fitness offerings that meet older adults exactly where they are. Leading this charge is Luke Logan, our Fitness and Aquatics Director, who brings a passion for empowering residents to move with confidence, purpose, and joy. We sat down with Luke to learn more about his approach and what makes fitness at Inspīr truly exceptional.
Q: What inspired you to specialize in fitness for older adults?
While managing commercial gyms, I noticed a significant lack of programming and resources for aging clients. That gap in care became personal for me – I was encouraging my own grandparents to stay active and saw how few opportunities there were for them. I knew I wanted to be part of the solution, to create spaces where older adults feel supported, capable, and seen.
Q: How does fitness at Inspīr differ from a traditional gym?
Everything here is designed with older adults in mind – from the equipment and class formats to the environment itself. The focus is on safety, function, and long-term wellness rather than intensity or aesthetics. It’s a space where residents feel empowered to engage in movement that supports their lifestyle and goals.
Q: What are some of the most popular or impactful classes?
Functional fitness has become my specialty over the years. These classes combine strength training, balance and stability work, and aerobic exercise – all adapted for the unique needs of older adults. It’s incredibly effective in helping residents stay independent and mobile in their day-to-day lives.
Q: How do you tailor fitness programs to meet a wide range of abilities and health conditions?
Inclusivity is central to everything I design. For residents with mobility limitations, we offer seated exercise classes that are just as engaging and beneficial. The pool is also a fantastic low-impact environment where we can build strength and endurance without putting stress on the joints. Every program can be adjusted to the individual, which is key.
Q: What role does fitness play in emotional and cognitive wellness for older adults?
There’s a strong connection between physical activity and brain health – research supports that. But beyond the cognitive benefits, fitness classes offer a meaningful social outlet. They create moments of connection, confidence, and joy. That emotional boost is just as important as the physical progress.
Q: What are some of the success stories you’ve seen?
Fall prevention is a big one. Helping residents improve balance and stability so they feel safer and more confident – that’s incredibly rewarding. But the stories that stay with me are the personal ones. I had one client tell me they finally had enough energy to keep up with their grandkids. That’s the kind of impact I strive for.
Q: What advice would you give to someone hesitant to start a fitness routine later in life?
It’s never too late to start. Even small steps can create meaningful change. I always say: a little progress is still progress. And once you begin, you often discover that you’re capable of much more than you thought.
Q: How do you incorporate mindfulness and recovery into your programming?
We offer yoga classes that emphasize both mindfulness and recovery. They’re a great way to encourage residents to slow down, tune into their breath, and allow their bodies to rest and restore. Recovery is just as essential as movement in building a sustainable wellness routine.
Q: What excites you most about leading the fitness program at Inspīr Embassy Row?
The opportunity to be part of something forward-thinking. Inspīr isn’t just offering fitness classes – we’re reimagining what senior wellness can be. I’m excited to create programs that genuinely enhance residents’ quality of life and to collaborate with a team that shares that vision.
Q: How do you see the future of wellness evolving in luxury senior living?
Wellness is no longer a nice-to-have – it’s becoming a central part of senior living. I’m seeing more resources devoted to fitness facilities, wellness coaching, and evidence-based programming. That shift is exciting. It means communities like Inspīr can lead the way in supporting active, engaging aging.
